Want the Best Care? It’s Right Here!
It’s 6:00 AM, our cesarean section patient eagerly awaits in her room for a member from the surgical team to escort her to surgery. She is greeted by one of our Kingfisher Regional Hospital surgical team members: Theresa Homier, RN, Kadriye Landis, RN, Hannah Powell, RN ,Linda Schemmer, RN, or Shelley Sanders, RN, director of emergency and surgical services. Together our team shares a combined total of 97 years experience in the various specialty areas of in-patient and emergency surgery medicine as well as labor & delivery, and general surgery. This highly skilled, experienced team combined with their compassion towards patients and families continues to maintain the standard of excellence at Kingfisher Regional Hospital.
A cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) is added to the day’s schedule and the surgical team quickly prepares for the arrival of our skilled and dedicated physicians while our CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist) prepares the patient for anesthesia. Our local physicians also provide bilateral tubal ligations, hysterectomy, appendectomy (removal of the appendix), tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (removal of tonsils and adenoids) as well as other minor procedures.
In addition, we have several specialists that perform procedures within our surgery department. A urologist who performs cystoscopy procedures which is the passage of a narrow telescope into the bladder for inspection and treatment of various conditions; a bladder suspension procedure for the treatment of female bladder control problems and urinary incontinence (bladder leakage). It is estimated that approximately 20 million women suffer from these issues in the United States affecting half of all women over the age of 60.
On a monthly basis, KRH has an ophthalmologist who performs multiple cataract surgeries. Cataracts affected approximately 2.7 million Americans last year alone. Thanks to the advances in cataract surgery more than 95% of those patients undergoing the surgery are now enjoying improved vision. From our patients perspective, it is a comfortable surgery performed with relatively low risk of complication while staying here at home. A recent patient experience tauted,” I can’t say enough good about this facility and my experience here.” Her local optometrist was pleased to report that she now has 20/20 vision in her left eye.
Our highly skilled Ear, Nose & Throat specialists offer such surgical procedures as myringotomy or the placement of ear tubes, tonsillectomies and adenoidentocmies, or the removal of tonsils and adenoids. Their compassion and gentle nature are an asset for our families.
Podiatry treatment is also offered through KRH surgery department which includes: bunion removal, surgical removal of ingrown toenails and other miscellaneous procedures of the feet and ankles.
Being able to offer valuable diagnostic tools at KRH, provides our patients and their families a benefit right here at home. Some of those procedures may include esophagogastroduodenoscopy’s (EGD’s) and colonoscopys. An EGD is an examination of the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum with a small camera (flexible endoscope) which is inserted down the throat. This procedure is often performed as a diagnostic tool for many ailments of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract such as heartburn or gastroesophagel reflux disease (GERD). A colonscopy allows doctors to look inside the entire large intestine. Once again it is a diagnostic tool that allows physicians to look for inflamed tissue, abnormal growths, and ulcers which can be early signs of cancer in the colon and rectum. It is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of unexplained changes in bowel habits and to evaluate symptoms like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding and weight loss.
While many rural hospitals face the possibility of closing, KRH is very fortunate to be able to provide these greatly needed resources today and in the near future. Our surgery team is a highly dedicated group of individuals that serve our community with a passion for excellence. We look forward to continuing our current excellent standard of service, and are excited about the future expansion of surgical services our new hospital will bring.
